ROLL CALL – Friends of Camp Hearne is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the preservation of Camp Hearne, a WWII prisoner of war camp located near Hearne, Texas. With the help of a Federal grant, we are building a replica of a 1942 US Army barrack on the original camp grounds. The exterior appearance closely replicates the black-felt buildings used during this time period. The first third of the building’s interior will be left “unfinished” with exposed studs as it was during the War. The middle section will be insulated finished walls and ceilings and house our Camp Hearne exhibit objects and artifacts. The final section will be the visitor center with ADA bathroom.
We located a set of original plans from the US Army archives and have tried to match dimensions and materials without compromising durability by using today’s technology and substituting similar, longer-lasting products. Because natural light is terribly damaging to artifacts, the “modern” part of the buildings interior does not have windows. Also, we have chosen a LED lighting fixture that is void of UV-light.
